Animal Care
Foundation Certificate - Level 1
Duration: 1 year
location: HC
About the course
Foundation Learning programmes in Animal Care are
designed to give learners the opportunity to obtain
knowledge and understanding of a range of skills for a
vocational experience with the following subjects:
• The care of animals
• Animal nutrition
• Animal accommodation
• Safe handling of animals
The courses are practical “hands on” programmes taught
in the context of real jobs and careers in the vocational
sector. The practical tasks are determined by the needs
of animals in the centre and at a local working farm. This
gives you the chance to explore the opportunities in that
sector, and acquire the appropriate vocational skills.
The Animal Centre at Horsforth is home to a range
of exotic and domestic animals. You will learn how to
handle, care for and house these animals in accordance
to current industry codes of practice and legislation. You
will also study animal husbandry at a local working farm.
You will also be required to undertake Functional
Skills and Personal & Social Development as part of
your programme. These qualifications have been
developed to increase your personal employability
and academic skills.
Weekly tutorial sessions are also incorporated to develop
the learners’ awareness of the wider curriculum, i.e.,
ethical, social and cultural issues, organisation skills,
confidence building and group work skills, all of which
are needed in order to prepare for the world of work, or
higher level courses.
Entry Requirements
