About the Course<br />
This programme is a one year top-up degree for<br />
learners who have already successfully completed either<br />
a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma in<br />
an animal-related subject. This programme is aimed at<br />
those wanting to work in the animal management sector<br />
in industries as varied as animal welfare, production,<br />
education, veterinary, companion and training to name<br />
a few. The course is regularly updated so that it meets<br />
the needs of the animal industry with consultations with<br />
employers and students. The course provides learners<br />
with underpinning knowledge of animal health issues,<br />
biodiversity, adaptive physiology and marine mammals,<br />
with a particular emphasis on animal conservation.<br />
There is also a research project in which student must<br />
chose a topic to investigate, research, formulate a<br />
methodology, collect and analyse data and come to a<br />
conclusion. Research links have been made with many<br />
organizations that allow students to collect data in the<br />
industry such as Zoos, conservation organizations and<br />
businesses. Assessments are designed to give students<br />
the opportunity of performing tasks that they would<br />
be asked to do in employment, such as measuring and<br />
reporting on biodiversity, rescuing marine mammals and<br />
presenting the results of research using scenarios and<br />
links with employers to help make them more realistic.<br />

You will develop academic skills such as scientific writing,<br />
presenting, referencing and research; practical skills such<br />
as rescuing marine mammals, identifying parasite and<br />
microbes and surveying skills. Students will also complete<br />
a research dissertation on an appropriate topic of their<br />
choice.<br />

Future Opportunities<br />
Students have progressed onto Masters degrees<br />
and Veterinary/Veterinary nursing studies, as well as<br />
employment in a variety of roles from teaching to animal<br />
training, zoo education officer to working for a variety<br />
of animal charities and self employment. Many students<br />
also progress onto graduate schemes.<br />
