About the course<br />

The level 2 diploma in work based horticulture will give<br />

you a general overview of the horticultural industry<br />

for those intending to work in horticulture and,<br />

depending on grades, offers progression to the level 3<br />

subsidiary diploma in horticulture at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

(Horsforth). You will develop an understanding and<br />

practical skills covering a wide range of horticultural<br />

related disciplines such as plant and soil science, practical<br />

landscaping skills and planting methods.<br />

You will learn about:<br />

Health and Safety monitoring, In-depth plant and weed<br />

identification and knowledge, The ability to identify and<br />

report plant pests, diseases and disorders, Ground and<br />

growing media preparation<br />

Plant seeds, prick out seedlings and establish plants in<br />

soil, Hard landscaping skills such as paving and fence<br />

building.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

1 grade C and 2 grades at D GCSE, including maths,<br />

English and science. Relevant industry experience is also<br />

considered. In all cases, we interview you to assess your<br />

ability to benefit from the course.<br />

All learners are recommended to have a current tetanus<br />

vaccination and need to provide their own safety boots.<br />

Future Opportunities<br />

The Level 2 Diploma in Work Based Horticulture is a<br />

nationally recognised qualification.<br />

Successful students could move into employment<br />

such as landscaping, council work, forestry and self<br />

employment. Learners can also progress (depending on<br />

grades) to a Level 3 Subsidiary Horticulture programme<br />

at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong> (Horsforth Campus). This offers<br />

access to related degree programmes (also offered at<br />

<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>).<br />

About the course<br />

The level 2 diploma in horticulture will give you a<br />

general overview of the horticultural industry for those<br />

intending to work in horticulture and, depending on<br />

grades, offers progression to the level 3 subsidiary<br />

diploma in horticulture at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. You will<br />

You can study a variety of topics including the Principles<br />

of Plant and Soil Science, Landscape Construction, Estate<br />

Maintenance, Environment and Land-based Business,<br />

Maintaining Plants Outdoors.<br />

You will also spend 150 hours on work placement which<br />

will be completed in a horticultural related sector,<br />

generally for one day per week over the course of the<br />

year.<br />
