About the course<br />
You learn a variety of subjects relating to a career<br />
in Conservation. The level 2 diploma in countryside<br />
and environment is generally taught over 3 days per<br />
week (subject to change) and will give you a general<br />
overview of the conservation industry for those<br />
intending to work in the industry and, depending on<br />
grades, offers progression to the level 3 Subsidiary<br />
Diploma in Countryside and Environment offered at<br />
<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
You will undertake the following core units:<br />
Work Related Experience in Countryside and<br />
Environment – You will cover employment in, for<br />
example, estate maintenance, game keeping, habitat<br />
conservation, waterways or in the service sector of<br />
the industry.<br />
Countryside and Environment Industry and<br />
Organisations – You will gain an understanding of the<br />
difference types of organisations, their characteristics<br />
and influences, and look at current trends and issues<br />
affecting the industry, you will study four specialist units:<br />
• Understanding Ecology of Trees, Wood & Forest.<br />
• Conservation & Improvement of British Habitats<br />
• Estate Maintenance<br />
• Maintain Plants Outdoors<br />
You will also spend 150 hours on work experience in a<br />
variety of conservation and environment industries.<br />
This programme is offered at the Horsforth Campus,<br />
which has access to a range of facilities on site including<br />
workshops, heated and non-heated glass-houses, poly<br />
tunnels, meadows, woodland area’s, ponds, tree nursery,<br />
beds, borders and lawns.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C and D including<br />
Mathematics or English, a Foundation Diploma<br />
(equivalent to 5 GCSEs at Grades D – G), NVQ1 or<br />
satisfactory completion of a Foundation Learning<br />
programme with a minimum of 37 credits (at level 1).<br />
In all cases, we interview you to assess your ability to<br />
benefit from the course. All learners are required to have<br />
a current tetanus vaccination.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
The level 2 diploma in countryside and environment<br />
is a nationally recognised qualification. Successful<br />
students have obtained employment in the industry.<br />
You can also progress (depending on grades) to a Level<br />
3 Subsidiary Diploma in Countryside Management at<br />
<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. This offers access to related degree<br />
programmes (also offered at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>).<br />
