About the Course<br />

This programme is ideal for school leavers who want<br />

to become skilled in building services engineering. This<br />

course develops your knowledge and skills in <strong>College</strong><br />

rather than in a working environment.<br />

You will learn by a series of practical exercises in wellequipped<br />

workshops, backed-up by relevant classroom<br />

theory. This includes an introduction to aspects of<br />

basic plumbing ,heating ,wiring, refrigeration and air<br />

conditioning.<br />

You will also undertake qualifications in Functional Skills,<br />

or resit GCSEs, if appropriate.<br />

This course will immerse in the world of building<br />

services engineering which expects its operatives to<br />

demonstrate a multi-discipline approach. Therefore the<br />

hand skills and technical knowledge that you will be<br />

learning will be a mix of mechanical and electrical. These<br />

skills will be applied over a range of systems that will<br />

allow demonstration of your understanding in a multidiscipline<br />

environment.<br />

You will cover the following:<br />

• Introduction to the building services<br />

engineering sector<br />

• Electrical<br />

• Plumbing<br />

• Refrigeration and air conditioning<br />

• Heating and ventilating.<br />

• Health and safety<br />

• Environmental awareness<br />

• Building services engineering science<br />

• Health and safety<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

A minimum of 4 GCSEs with English at grade C, a<br />

Foundation Diploma (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at Grades D<br />

– G), NVQ1 or satisfactory completion of a Foundation<br />

Learning programme with a minimum of 37 credits (at<br />

level 1).<br />

In all cases, we interview you to assess your ability to<br />

benefit from the course.<br />

All learners are required to provide their own safety<br />

footwear.<br />

Future Opportunities<br />

You can progress to a Level 2 Plumbing Qualification at<br />

<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. You could<br />

also progress onto an apprenticeship if you have suitable<br />

employment.<br />

As a plumber you would install, service and repair<br />

plumbing systems in homes and businesses. Depending<br />

on whether you work in domestic, industrial or<br />

commercial premises, your duties<br />

could include:<br />

• Installing and repairing water supplies, heating systems<br />

and drainage<br />

• Servicing gas- and oil-fired central heating systems,<br />

boilers and radiators<br />

• Installing and fixing domestic appliances like showers<br />

and washing machines<br />

• Servicing air-conditioning and ventilation units<br />
