About the Course<br />

The programme is aimed at those wanting to work in<br />

the wildlife management and conservation sector. It<br />

prepares people for employment in a variety of roles -<br />

countryside rangers, ecologists, nature reserve managers,<br />

environmental consultants, to name a few. The course<br />

is regularly updated so that it meets the needs of the<br />

wildlife and conservation industry through consultations<br />

with employers and students. The course provides<br />

learners with underpinning knowledge of wildlife<br />

conservation, practical field skills, ecology and habitat<br />

management. There is an emphasis on the development<br />

of skills; general skills such as communication, IT<br />

and teamwork, and practical skills such as wildlife<br />

identification, ecological survey work, habitat creation<br />

and repair, tool and equipment use. Work placement<br />

forms an essential part of the course allowing on the<br />

job training and development of further skills to make<br />

students more employable. Assessments are designed<br />

to give students the opportunity to develop skills and<br />

knowledge that are relevant to employment in this<br />

field, such as project work identifying and surveying<br />

protected species. Much of the course content is<br />

embedded into real working scenarios though good links<br />

with local countryside and conservation organisations,<br />

which can open up opportunities for further study and<br />

employment.<br />

Work-related learning, personal and professional<br />

development are also developed throughout the<br />

programme.<br />

You will develop academic skills such as scientific writing,<br />

presenting, referencing and research; practical skills<br />

such as plant and animal identification, laboratory skills,<br />

habitat management and surveying; and many skills<br />

required by employers such as communication, use of<br />

IT and specific conservation management packages,<br />

teamwork and independent work.<br />

Future Opportunities<br />

The <strong>College</strong> has an agreed progression route from this<br />

qualification on to the BSc. in Animal Management at<br />

<strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. Many students also progress onto<br />

the B.Sc. (Hons.) in Environmental Science at Bradford<br />

University. However you can also apply to other<br />

Universities to do top up degrees.<br />
