About the course<br />
The BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care will give<br />
you a general overview of the Animal Care Industry<br />
and is aimed at those intending to work in this<br />
industry and, depending on grades, offers progression<br />
to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal<br />
Management at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
You study a variety of topics including Animal Health<br />
and Welfare, Animal Behaviour, Animal Handling, Animal<br />
Accommodation, Animal Feeding, Animal Grooming,<br />
Animal Biology and Animal Nursing.<br />
You will also spend 150 hours on work placement which<br />
will be completed in an animal related sector, generally<br />
for one day per week over the course of the year.<br />
The Horsforth Campus has an Animal Centre, offering<br />
you access to a range of facilities. The Centre includes<br />
an aquatics room, two small mammal rooms, a tropical<br />
exotics room, practical handling rooms and a grooming<br />
salon. Here, you will have the opportunity to combine<br />
both theoretical and practical sides of animal care.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C and D including<br />
Mathematics or English, a Foundation Diploma<br />
(equivalent to 5 GCSEs at Grades D – G), NVQ1<br />
or satisfactory completion of a Foundation<br />
Learning programme with a minimum of 37 credits<br />
(at level 1).<br />
In all cases, we interview you to assess your ability to<br />
benefit from the course.<br />
About the course<br />
You will study a variety of subjects relating to a career<br />
in the animal care industry. Career opportunities after<br />
completion of the course may be in Veterinary Nursing,<br />
Animal Welfare, Animal Nutrition, Animal Training, Pet<br />
Retail, Animal Collection work such as safari park / zoo<br />
keeper, or Kennel and Cattery work. Subjects include:<br />
Understand the Principles of Animal Biology, Promote<br />
Animal Health, Animal Anatomy and Physiology,<br />
Principles of Animal Nutrition, Investigative Project,<br />
Undertake Animal Handling and Safe Working,<br />
Principles of Animal Nursing, Undertake Wildlife<br />
Management and Rehabilitation, Principles and<br />
Carry Out the Practice of Exotic Animal Health and<br />
Husbandry, Principles of Aquatics Husbandry and<br />
Management, Plan and Monitor Animal Feeding,<br />
Manage Animal Accommodation.<br />
You will develop an understanding and practical skills<br />
covering a wide range of animal related disciplines such<br />
as animal biology, health, wildlife management, nutrition<br />
and nursing.<br />
The course is taught through theory and practically<br />
based sessions and you will also have to successfully<br />
complete an 8 week work experience block during the 2<br />
year of study. You will also complete Functional Skills or<br />
resit GCSEs, if needed.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including<br />
Mathematics and/or English or equivalent, a Higher<br />
Diploma (which is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at Grades A* -<br />
C, NVQ2 or level 2 Diploma at merit grade with Maths<br />
and English at minimum Grade C or equivalent.<br />
