About the Course<br />
This programme is aimed at those wanting to work in<br />
the animal management sector in industries as varied<br />
as animal welfare, production, education, veterinary,<br />
companion and training to name a few. The course<br />
is regularly updated so that it meets the needs of the<br />
animal industry through consultations with employers<br />
and students.<br />
The course provides learners with underpinning<br />
knowledge of animal health, husbandry, welfare,<br />
behaviour, animal science and management. There is an<br />
emphasis on the development of skills; general skills such<br />
as communication, IT and teamwork, and practical skills<br />
such as animal handling, health checking, animal first aid,<br />
monitoring and evaluating behaviour, training animals,<br />
design and maintenance of animal accommodation and<br />
assessing animal welfare. Work placement forms an<br />
essential part of the course allowing on the job training<br />
and development of further skills to make students more<br />
employable. Assessments are designed to give students<br />
the opportunity of performing tasks that they would<br />
be asked to do in employment, such as dealing with a<br />
first aid situation or assessing an animal for suitability to<br />
rehome, using scenarios and links with employers to help<br />
make them<br />
more realistic.<br />

You will develop academic skills such as scientific writing,<br />
presenting, referencing and research; practical skills<br />
such as animal handling, laboratory skills, animal first<br />
aid and animal training; and many skills required by<br />
employers such as communication, use of IT, teamwork,<br />
independent work and dealing with the public.<br />

Future Opportunities<br />
The <strong>College</strong> has an agreed progression route from<br />
this qualification on to the B.Sc. (Hons.) Animal<br />
Management (Top up) at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>. However<br />
you can also apply to other Universities to do top<br />
up degrees. Many students go on to employment in<br />
a variety of roles including Veterinary nurse trainee,<br />
pet shop manager, zoo keeper, education officer and<br />
working for a variety of charities such as the RSPCA and<br />
Dogs Trust.<br />
