About the course<br />

The course gives you a basic understanding of what<br />

working in environmental conservation involves. The<br />

learning will take place in various countryside settings<br />

and habitats providing you with the skills and knowledge<br />

required to find employment or progress to additional<br />

courses in practical wildlife or estates management.<br />

During the course you will be given the opportunity to<br />

use an extensive selection of hand tools and mechanised<br />

equipment. Students studying this course will also<br />

complete a wide range of activities promoting social<br />

development and employability skills. As part of the<br />

land based team you will develop strong links with local<br />

employers and community groups giving you direct<br />

contact with future employers.<br />

You will study a wide range of practical countryside and<br />

estate management tasks.<br />

These could include:<br />

Practical habitat management, Hedge laying, Pond<br />

maintenance Woodland skills, Footpath Construction,<br />

Constructing and maintaining fences<br />

The courses are practical “hands on” programmes taught<br />

in the context of real jobs and careers in a vocational<br />

sector. The practical tasks are determined by the needs<br />

of local employers and wildlife groups. This gives you<br />

the chance to explore the opportunities in that sector,<br />

and acquire the appropriate vocational skills.<br />

You will also be required to undertake Functional Skills<br />

and Personal & Social Development as part of your<br />

programme.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

Students wishing to enrol to a Foundation Learning<br />

Programme will come with a range of qualifications<br />

which could include GCSEs, units of qualifications<br />

already taken or have few or no qualifications.<br />

All students on Foundation Learning programmes<br />

will be required to take qualifications in Personal and<br />

Social Development, Employability Skills, a vocational<br />

qualification and Maths and English. Each student will<br />

be invited to an interview where a personalised learning<br />

programme can be discussed and agreed. In all cases<br />

offers will be subject to interview/transition gateway<br />

and a positive reference from school/tutor<br />

Future Opportunities<br />

You could progress to a foundation learning landbased<br />

level 1 programme in horticulture, conservation<br />

or animal care offered at <strong>Leeds</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>College</strong>, or into<br />

employment.<br />
