About the course
The course gives you a basic understanding of what
working in environmental conservation involves. The
learning will take place in various countryside settings
and habitats providing you with the skills and knowledge
required to find employment or progress to additional
courses in practical wildlife or estates management.
During the course you will be given the opportunity to
use an extensive selection of hand tools and mechanised
equipment. Students studying this course will also
complete a wide range of activities promoting social
development and employability skills. As part of the
land based team you will develop strong links with local
employers and community groups giving you direct
contact with future employers.
You will study a wide range of practical countryside and
estate management tasks.
These could include:
Practical habitat management, Hedge laying, Pond
maintenance Woodland skills, Footpath Construction,
Constructing and maintaining fences
The courses are practical “hands on” programmes taught
in the context of real jobs and careers in a vocational
sector. The practical tasks are determined by the needs
of local employers and wildlife groups. This gives you
the chance to explore the opportunities in that sector,
and acquire the appropriate vocational skills.
You will also be required to undertake Functional Skills
and Personal & Social Development as part of your
programme.
Entry Requirements
Students wishing to enrol to a Foundation Learning
Programme will come with a range of qualifications
which could include GCSEs, units of qualifications
already taken or have few or no qualifications.
All students on Foundation Learning programmes
will be required to take qualifications in Personal and
Social Development, Employability Skills, a vocational
qualification and Maths and English. Each student will
be invited to an interview where a personalised learning
programme can be discussed and agreed. In all cases
offers will be subject to interview/transition gateway
and a positive reference from school/tutor
Future Opportunities
You could progress to a foundation learning landbased
level 1 programme in horticulture, conservation
or animal care offered at Leeds City College, or into
employment.
