challenge. Over 20,000 calving records collected over a 10-year

Adynamic and stochastic cattle simulation model is briefly described
and validated for production conditions in a study area in Botswana
using Tswana and Simmental x Tswana cattle. The performances of
the two genotypes under various milking and supplementation policies
are compared, and the economic trade-offs between milk and
meat production are presented. An optimum production strategy is
defined, and policy options for the development of Botswana's
dairying sector are outlined.

productivity estimates for indigenous Arsi and Zebu cattle and eight
different grades of crosses of these with Jersey and Friesian, maintained
for milk production. Data were collected from animals kept at
Asela station and smallholder farms in the Arsi Region of Ethiopia in
the period 1968-81.
