General Information
The West Africa Rice Development Association which was formed in
September 1970 under the auspices of UNDP, FAO, and ECA is an
intergovernmental organization consisting of 16 member countries
namely: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote d’lvoire, The Gambia,
Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger,
Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
The Headquarters of WARDA are located in Bouake (Cote d’lvoire)
while its three Regional Research Stations are located at Mbe Valley,
near Bouake, Cote d’lvoire (Upland/lnland Swamp Continuum Program);
Rokupr, Sierra Leone (Mangrove Swamp Rice Program),
Saint-Louise, Senegal (Sahel Program Rice). In addition, WARDA
has a research sub-station at Suakoko and a Regional Training
Center at Fendall (Liberia).
WARDA is one of the 13 International Agricultural Research Centers
(IARCs) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR). The Association has been mandated to conduct
and promote rice research to improve the technical and economic
options available to smallholder farm families in West Africa.
