General Information<br />

The West Africa Rice Development Association which was formed in<br />

September 1970 under <strong>the</strong> auspices <strong>of</strong> UNDP, FAO, and ECA is an<br />

intergovernmental organization consisting <strong>of</strong> 16 member countries<br />

namely: Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Cote d’lvoire, The Gambia,<br />

Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger,<br />

Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.<br />

The Headquarters <strong>of</strong> WARDA are located in Bouake (Cote d’lvoire)<br />

while its three Regional Research Stations are located at Mbe Valley,<br />

near Bouake, Cote d’lvoire (Upland/lnland Swamp Continuum Program);<br />

Rokupr, Sierra Leone (Mangrove Swamp Rice Program),<br />

Saint-Louise, Senegal (Sahel Program Rice). In addition, WARDA<br />

has a research sub-station at Suakoko and a Regional Training<br />

Center at Fendall (Liberia).<br />

WARDA is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 13 <strong>International</strong> Agricultural Research Centers<br />

(IARCs) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Consultative Group on <strong>International</strong> Agricultural Research<br />

(CGIAR). The Association has been mandated to conduct<br />

and promote rice research to improve <strong>the</strong> technical and economic<br />

options available to smallholder farm families in West Africa.<br />
