The 1988 World Food Prize, <strong>the</strong> second awarded, was presented to<br />

Dr. Robert F. Chandler, former director general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong><br />

Rice Research Institute, in October 1988. A Colloquium on Completing<br />

<strong>the</strong> Food Chain was convened at <strong>the</strong> Smithsonian Institution in<br />

association with <strong>the</strong> Prize.<br />

Completing <strong>the</strong> Food chain is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> this international ga<strong>the</strong>ring<br />

<strong>of</strong> agricultural scientists, nutritionists, medical doctors, and food<br />

policy leaders from nine nations.<br />
