The 1988 World Food Prize, the second awarded, was presented to
Dr. Robert F. Chandler, former director general of the International
Rice Research Institute, in October 1988. A Colloquium on Completing
the Food Chain was convened at the Smithsonian Institution in
association with the Prize.
Completing the Food chain is the result of this international gathering
of agricultural scientists, nutritionists, medical doctors, and food
policy leaders from nine nations.
Highlights include an in-depth probe of regional food and agriculture
issues in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Contributors share insights
and perspectives from a number of disciplines and professional
vantage points, including biogenetics and biotechnology, physiology
and public health, economics, rural development, and agricultural
science.
In the search for solutions to contemporary food and agricultural
problems, the essays explore the lessons of the agricultural "Green
Revolution," and the new food and biogenetic technologies that will
boost future food production.

The book is the proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on
Genetic Manipulation in Crops, held at CIMMYT, 29-31 August 1988.
The first symposium, held in Beijing, China, in October 1984 reviewed
genetic manipulation work through 1984. This book summarizes
research achievements since then. It is the consensus of plant
breeder, geneticists, and other biologists that biotechnology holds
the most hope for rapid improvement of crop plants, and for the
advances required to sustain yield increases demanded in the face
of an expanding world population and shrinking land resources.
