This book describes the first four years of a group of four AClAR
forestry projects, which operated in Australia, China, Kenya, Thailand
and Zimbabwe. It provides a history of the initiation and development
of the projects and describes project activities-seed collection of
lesser-known Australian species, species elimination and evaluation
trials, climatic matching, fodder assessment, essential leaf oils,
fuelwood studies, termite studies, and nutrition. The book contains
results to date and evaluates these in terms of utilising Australia's
lesser-known trees and shrubs for developing countries. A list of
publications pertaining to ACIAR forestry projects is also included.

This handbook describes simple, reliable methods of measuring
nitrogen fixation that have emerged from ACIAR-funded research. It
is intended for use by developing country scientists who desire a
better understanding of the role of nitrogen fixation in cropping
systems. Biological nitrogen fixation by food and forage legumes can
add significant amounts of nitrogen to the soil for use by companion
or subsequent cereal crops. It is hoped that this cheaper alternative
to nitrogen fertilizers can be better utilised by resource-poor farmers,
who are the ultimate clients of technologies emerging from the
research that AClAR supports.
