In this publication the rice situation in West Africa is analyzed in terms
of consumption, imports and production, and projections of these up
to the year 2000.
Although West African rice production is expected to continue to
increase, per capita consumption in the 1990’s is likely to drop by
about 20% based on import reduction targets and other factors,
notably foreign exchange availability, which are likely to constrain
commercial imports.

This publication marks the tenth anniversary of the WARDA Mangrove
Swamp Rice Research Program that was established in 1977
at Rokupr, Sierra Leone. It highlightsthe efforts to tailor research on
physical and biological problems to the difficult social and economic
conditions of mangrove swamp rice farmers. It gives a summary of
WARDAs achievements and contribution in this particular rice growing
environment.
