infection <strong>of</strong> cattle and improved, cost-effective control methods to<br />

protect livestock against East Coast fever. The papers give data on<br />

<strong>the</strong> prevalence <strong>of</strong> East Coast fever in eastern, central, and sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Africa since <strong>the</strong> previous workshop in this series, held in 1985. They<br />

report on immunization trials using an infection-and-treatment method,<br />

paying particular attention to problems encountered in applying this<br />

method. Invited papers discuss <strong>the</strong> attitude <strong>of</strong> governments to<br />

immunization, <strong>the</strong> role <strong>of</strong> regional veterinary centers in East Coast<br />

fever control, tick control methods in use, parasite characterization,<br />

<strong>the</strong>epidemiology <strong>of</strong> East Coast fever (including carrierstates and <strong>the</strong><br />

role <strong>of</strong> wildlife), data handling and analysis (including <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

geographic information systems), and chemo<strong>the</strong>rapeutic treatment<br />

for <strong>the</strong> disease. The proceedings end with recommendations on<br />

research coordination, laboratory safety measures, and parasite<br />
