These are the proceedings of one in a series of workshops held to
provide summaries and updates of research into Theileria parva
infection of cattle and improved, cost-effective control methods to
protect livestock against East Coast fever. The papers give data on
the prevalence of East Coast fever in eastern, central, and southern
Africa since the previous workshop in this series, held in 1985. They
report on immunization trials using an infection-and-treatment method,
paying particular attention to problems encountered in applying this
method. Invited papers discuss the attitude of governments to
immunization, the role of regional veterinary centers in East Coast
fever control, tick control methods in use, parasite characterization,
theepidemiology of East Coast fever (including carrierstates and the
role of wildlife), data handling and analysis (including the use of
geographic information systems), and chemotherapeutic treatment
for the disease. The proceedings end with recommendations on
research coordination, laboratory safety measures, and parasite
nomenclature.
