General information<br />

Rice is life itself to almost a third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s 4.5 billion people. The<br />

average annual income <strong>of</strong> rice consumers in <strong>the</strong> developing nations<br />

is less than US$300.00. Rice is a secondary staple for ano<strong>the</strong>r 450<br />

million people.<br />

Rising populations and <strong>the</strong> demand for more food put increasing<br />

burdens on <strong>the</strong> world’s small-scale rice farmers.<br />

The <strong>International</strong> Rice Research Institute (<strong>IRRI</strong>) has as its objective<br />

<strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> quality and quantity <strong>of</strong> rice. Established in<br />

1960 by <strong>the</strong> Ford and <strong>the</strong> Rockefeller Foundations, this nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organization<br />

is adjacent to <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Philippines at Los<br />

Baños, 65 km sou<strong>the</strong>ast <strong>of</strong> Manila.<br />

Today, IRRl is funded through <strong>the</strong> Consultative Group for <strong>International</strong><br />

Agricultural Research, a group <strong>of</strong> donor agencies dedicated to<br />

<strong>the</strong> improvement <strong>of</strong> agriculture in developing nations. IRRl scientists<br />

cooperate with scientists across <strong>the</strong> world to develop improved rice<br />

varieties and technology.<br />

Since its inception, <strong>IRRI</strong> has stressed <strong>the</strong> communication <strong>of</strong> rice<br />

research and production technology through <strong>books</strong>, conference<br />

proceedings, periodicals, and o<strong>the</strong>r instructional materials.<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> primary purpose <strong>of</strong> IRRl publications is to increase <strong>the</strong><br />

flow <strong>of</strong> rice information in developing nations, IRRl provides materials<br />

at a 70% discount in developing nations.<br />

Book dealers in both highly developed countries (HDCs) and less<br />

developed countries (LDCs) receive a 40% discount.<br />

Prices and airmail and surface mail costs are included for HDCs and<br />

LDCs. Please add appropriate postage fee to <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> each book.<br />

CUSTOMERS IN THE PHILIPPINES MAY PAY WITH PHILIPPINE<br />

CURRENCY.<br />

Surface mail orders can only be sent in 5-kg packages. We can only<br />

process surface mail orders that total 20 kg or less.<br />
