The Rust Diseases of Wheat: Concepts and Methods of Disease
Management
1990.120 pages. 21.5 x 28 cm. Saddle wire stitched. ISBN968-6127-
47-X. HDC $15.00. LDC $5.00.
The rusts of wheat are among the most studied plant diseases. This
practical manual reviews the scientific literature on rust pathogens to
provide a single source of information for scientists and students.
Detailed presentations are given on epidemiology, hosts, and pathogens
for each type of rust. Methods of disease control (resistance,
chemicals, and cultural methods) are discussed. The text also covers
such topics as inoculum production, inoculation methods, disease
scoring, testing for genes, and strategies for utilizing resistance.
1987-88 CIMMYT World Wheat Facts and Trends. The Wheat
Revolution Revisited: Recent Trends and Future Challenges
1989.57 pages. 21.5 x 28 cm. Saddle wire stitched. ISSN0257876X.
Available in English and Spanish. HDC $12.00. LDC $6.00.
This issue is divided into three parts. Part 1 summarizes major trends
in cereal production in the postwar period, analyzes wheat production
according to moisture regime, discusses sources of yield increases
in wheat in developing countries over the past decade, and
assesses the possibilities for future increases in production and
consumption. Part 2 provides an overview of the current world wheat
situation. Part 3 assembles statistics on production, consumption,
trade, and prices, among other aspects. It is suggested that future
gains in productivity will depend on adopting a strategy somewhat
different from that followed in the past: rather than relying chiefly on
the interaction of improved germplasm, fertilizer, and irrigation,
productivity in both favored and marginal areas could be raised by
increasing the efficiency with which current technology is used.
