F.F.T.C. Book Series
F.F.T.C. is an international agricultural information center, funded by
the governments of the China, Korea and Japan. the Center was
established in 1970 to assist in the development of agriculture in the
Asian and Pacific region by promoting the exchange and dissemination
of information. We are particularly concerned with technology
suitable for small farms in the region, and distribute over 50,000 free
Bulletins every year as well as books. The books listed below have
been distributed free of charge to agricultural libraries in the Asian and
Pacific region, and in developing countries outside the region.
The prices listed below are slightly above cost, and include packing
and airmail postage. Any profits are unintentional, and will be used
to further our free publications program for the developing world.

This book is the Proceedings of an international symposium on Horticultural
Breeding, held at National Chung Hsing University, China in
December 1986. It brings together some of the most recent research
being carried out in the Asian and Pacific region on the breeding of
horticultural crops-vegetables, fruit and ornamental plants-and describes
some of the plant breeding programs now in progress.
The breeding of improved varieties is a vital aspect of modern small
farm agriculture. It is always the small-scale farmer who finds it most
difficult to overcome the constraints of his environment to produce
good crops. He often cannot afford the irrigation system, the chemical
fertilizers and soil amendments, the pesticides, that can create
favorable growing conditions in almost any soil. What he needs are
varieties adapted to his particular needs, which can use available
inputs under local conditions to give him a marketable crop which
gives him a good return for his efforts. We hope this volume will be of
value to all those engaged in the vital task of creating improved
horticultural crop varieties for the farmers of this region.
