This handbook presents procedures and techniques with which to
identify, diagnose, survey, and control intestinal parasites of ruminants
in sub-Saharan Africa. The type and level of parasitism in a herd
or flock must be assessed before the significance of parasite infections
can be determined and economical control measures recommended.
The handbook is intended for wide use in African universities,
national veterinary laboratories, and rural veterinary clinics. The
epidemiology of gastro-intestinal parasites is reviewed, and procedures
for diagnosing these parasites are given in a simple, cookbook
style. Guidelines for the design and interpretation of field investigations
and the principles of control based on the results of such
investigations are presented.
