<strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> Upgrade <strong>Business</strong> <strong>Case</strong><br />

Current state of the airport<br />

The <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> airport is owned and managed by the <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> <strong>Council</strong>,<br />

who has successfully operated the airport since 1983.<br />

<strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> airport (runway, taxiway A and the apron) was designed for Fokker<br />

F27 turbo prop aircraft (approximately 50 seats) and can easily accommodate the<br />

current RPT services from Regional Express (Rex) that operate the Adelaide-<strong>Kingscote</strong><br />

service using the smaller <strong>SA</strong>AB 340 aircraft with approximately 34 seats. The <strong>SA</strong>AB<br />

340 has been out of production since 1998, and as<br />

the aircraft in service are at least 15 years old, there<br />

is a need to consider facilities that would replace<br />

this aircraft in the future.<br />

The airport lounge within the terminal building was<br />

last refurbished in 1988 and is not currently set up<br />

for security screening of passengers and luggage.<br />

The current airport is comprised of a 12 year old<br />

main runway, and a 28 year old terminal building.<br />

The facilities are workable for the current regular<br />

passenger transport services, but will not service<br />

aircraft types that would replace the <strong>SA</strong>AB 340 Current <strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> airport terminal building<br />

currently run by Rex, will not accommodate other<br />

airlines (other than Rex), will not accommodate any upgrade to airport security, and do<br />

not accommodate a range of high pressure tyred aircraft that seek access to <strong>Kangaroo</strong><br />

<strong>Island</strong> from time to time.<br />

3.2.2 Facilities<br />

Aircraft Pavements<br />

<strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> <strong>Airport</strong> has 3 existing runways<br />

comprising:<br />

• runway 01/19 – 1402m x 30m bituminous<br />

sealed main runway aligned N-S;<br />

• runway 06/24 – 1134m x 30 gravelled cross<br />

runway aligned ENE – WSW; and,<br />

• runway 15/33 - 1164m x 30m gravelled cross<br />

runway aligned NNW – SSE.<br />

<strong>Kangaroo</strong> <strong>Island</strong> airport aircraft pavements<br />

The main runway, runway 01/19, was designed for use by the Fokker F27turbo prop<br />

aircraft at a maximum weight of approximately 20 tonnes at a tyre pressure of 550kPa.<br />

That runway currently receives regular Saab 340 services in addition to general<br />

aviation charter, aerial work and private flying.<br />

Runways 06/24 and 15/33 are unsealed and have been constructed primarily to cater<br />

for light aircraft when winds on the main runway are unsuitable for a north south<br />

approach.<br />

The sealed apron has parking space available for 1 x BAe 146 (eastern extension); 3 x<br />

Saab and 1 x Dash8/Saab or 1 x RFDS PC 12 (main apron); and 3 x Cessna 402 or<br />

equivalent (western extension). The overall length of the apron is 300m with a depth of<br />
