041.037 And <strong>of</strong> His portents are <strong>the</strong> night and <strong>the</strong> day and <strong>the</strong> sun and <strong>the</strong><br />

moon. Adore not <strong>the</strong> sun not <strong>the</strong> moon; but adore Allah Who created <strong>the</strong>m, if<br />

it is in truth Him Whom ye worship.<br />

053.049 And that He it is Who is <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> Sirius;<br />

These verses tell us that <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah would worship <strong>the</strong> stars<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Moon. However <strong>the</strong> reason why <strong>the</strong>y did this is not given. One<br />

reason could be connected to astrology. As in <strong>the</strong> present day, astrologers <strong>of</strong><br />

old used to study <strong>the</strong> positions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moon, sun and o<strong>the</strong>r planets believing<br />

that <strong>the</strong>ir motions affect human beings. This may have caused <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

believe <strong>the</strong> sun, moon and planets as something superior and <strong>of</strong> great<br />

importance so <strong>the</strong>y worshipped <strong>the</strong>m. Ano<strong>the</strong>r reason could be because <strong>the</strong>y<br />

felt that <strong>the</strong> sun and moon provide us with many benefits, such as producing<br />

heat, and giving light to plants enabling <strong>the</strong>m to grow and due to <strong>the</strong> benefits<br />

<strong>the</strong>y give to <strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong>y felt <strong>the</strong>y should be worshipped. And Allah<br />

knows best!<br />

…and Idols<br />

053.019 Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza<br />

053.020 And Manat, <strong>the</strong> third, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r ?<br />

053.021 Are yours <strong>the</strong> males and His <strong>the</strong> females ?<br />

These verses inform us <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> three idols which were worshipped<br />

by <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah. O<strong>the</strong>r names <strong>of</strong> idols that were worshipped by<br />

<strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah are mentioned in <strong>the</strong> books <strong>of</strong> Tarikh.<br />

ORIGIN OF IDOLS<br />

053.023 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fa<strong>the</strong>rs, for<br />

which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that<br />

which (<strong>the</strong>y) <strong>the</strong>mselves desire. And now <strong>the</strong> guidance from <strong>the</strong>ir Lord hath<br />

come unto <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

010.066 Lo! is it not unto Allah that belongeth whosoever is in <strong>the</strong> heavens<br />

and whosoever is in <strong>the</strong> earth ? Those who follow aught instead <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

follow not (His) partners. They follow only a conjecture, and <strong>the</strong>y do but<br />

guess.<br />
