Ali: The poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah believed that Allah was <strong>the</strong> Creator, <strong>the</strong>y<br />
worshipped Him and in difficult times <strong>the</strong>y would invoke Allah. However,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y also believed that <strong>the</strong> deceased pious were <strong>the</strong> intermediates between<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves and Allah as Allah Almighty says in <strong>the</strong> Qur’an:<br />
029.061 And if thou wert to ask <strong>the</strong>m: Who created <strong>the</strong> heavens and <strong>the</strong><br />
earth, and constrained <strong>the</strong> sun and <strong>the</strong> moon (to <strong>the</strong>ir appointed work) ?<br />
<strong>the</strong>y would say: Allah. How <strong>the</strong>n are <strong>the</strong>y turned away ?<br />
029.062 Allah maketh <strong>the</strong> provision wide for whom He will <strong>of</strong> His bondmen,<br />
and straiteneth it for whom (He will). Lo! Allah is Aware <strong>of</strong> all things.<br />
029.063 And if thou wert to ask <strong>the</strong>m: Who causeth water to come down<br />
from <strong>the</strong> sky, and <strong>the</strong>rewith reviveth <strong>the</strong> earth after its death ? <strong>the</strong>y verily<br />
would say: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m have no sense<br />
These verses prove that <strong>the</strong> poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah did not deny Allah and<br />
<strong>the</strong>y worshipped Him, however, <strong>the</strong>y made intermediates between<br />
<strong>the</strong>mselves and Allah.<br />
Qadhi: This is correct. The poly<strong>the</strong>ists <strong>of</strong> Makkah did believe in Allah,<br />
though <strong>the</strong>y did not associate <strong>the</strong> deceased pious with Him in any way. They<br />
did that for Lat, Mannat and Uzza (<strong>the</strong>ir idols).<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
They believed in two gods, though <strong>the</strong>y believed <strong>the</strong>ir gods were<br />
rivals with <strong>the</strong> one God.<br />
They gave <strong>the</strong>ir idols a higher status than Allah. For example, if <strong>the</strong>y<br />
distributed 10 dates for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> Allah, <strong>the</strong>y would distribute 12 for<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir idols. (I seek shelter in Allah!)<br />
When <strong>the</strong>y slaughtered animals <strong>the</strong>y invoked <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir idols.<br />
They used to make sacrifices for <strong>the</strong>ir idols.<br />
They thought <strong>the</strong>ir gods were entitled to be worshipped <strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong>y<br />
worshipped <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
When someone would insult or swear at <strong>the</strong>ir idols <strong>the</strong>y would insult<br />
and swear at Allah. (I seek shelter in Allah!)<br />
They would sacrifice <strong>the</strong>ir children in order to please <strong>the</strong>ir idols.<br />
They would harvest in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir idols.<br />
