The group then considers the tensions or conflicts (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g gender position)<br />

that may have arisen <strong>in</strong> Anna’s life as a female pioneer of social work.<br />

Episode 7<br />

The story goes on: The teacher says that Anna has now moved to a new town<br />

where she is work<strong>in</strong>g as the first female social worker <strong>in</strong> the town.<br />

Def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g space and stag<strong>in</strong>g: The teacher asks students to imag<strong>in</strong>e the k<strong>in</strong>d of<br />

town under exam<strong>in</strong>ation and its location. What k<strong>in</strong>d of people live there and<br />

what do they do? What is the physical environment like? The students may<br />

stage the town as they like (special stag<strong>in</strong>g is not a ma<strong>in</strong> issue, but the teacher<br />

may provide some symbols). What more is needed, <strong>in</strong> their op<strong>in</strong>ion?<br />

Tak<strong>in</strong>g a role: The students are asked to create roles that they wish to act out<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g personality, identity, status, and family affairs.). They place themselves<br />

on the stage and must become their role characters for a moment. Then the<br />

teacher <strong>in</strong>tervenes and asks members of the group to tell each other who they<br />

are and state their viewpo<strong>in</strong>ts on women as social workers.<br />

Episode 8<br />

The story goes on: The teacher now reveals that the townspeople have divided<br />

<strong>in</strong>to two groups: those who do not wish to have a female social worker (Anna)<br />

<strong>in</strong> town and those who do.<br />

Students are asked to create two groups: 1) a group of townspeople who support<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g Anna as a female social worker <strong>in</strong> town, and 2) a group of townspeople<br />

who oppose this. The groups should consider the arguments and counter-arguments<br />

and discuss the matter together.<br />

Episode 9<br />

The story goes on: The teacher says that the two groups <strong>in</strong> question hold a meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the town’s marketplace. There is gossip<strong>in</strong>g about Anna.<br />

Meet<strong>in</strong>g: The groups are asked to defend their respective positions <strong>in</strong> a short<br />

improvisational scene, whereby the two groups encounter each other <strong>in</strong> the<br />

marketplace.<br />

Episode 10<br />

Teacher-<strong>in</strong>-role: The teacher now takes on the role of male mayor of the town<br />

(or some other authoritative figure), who has the authority to decide whether<br />

female social workers are allowed to work <strong>in</strong> the town.<br />
