the scenes, weapons, and faces of domestic abuse. But beyond the<br />

beat<strong>in</strong>gs by their partners, the pictures tell of a culture of violence<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st women — one that persists <strong>in</strong> South Africa and across the<br />

world.<br />

Photographers clearly face ethical pitfalls when document<strong>in</strong>g stories<br />

about communities or <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have been through traumatic<br />

experiences. In studio photography, a particular challenge is tak<strong>in</strong>g family<br />

photos of special children. Children with disabilities and their families often<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g professional photographers <strong>in</strong> the art of photograph<strong>in</strong>g children<br />

with special needs and severe disabilities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g autism, Down syndrome,<br />

cerebral palsy and many other conditions.<br />
