The photographer who, as he states for himself, quit
studying on the Faculty of Economy because he had a
desire for doing art, already in 1999 had been noticed
on the contest “Cultural and Natural Heritage” organised
by Croatian Film Association.
His interest for Postirian kogule (pebbles) should be understood
in that context, that kogule are not just a kind
of productive artistic object to him but as well as an
object of cultural and natural heritage, which has to
be preserved at any cost. Šantić is an active member
of Photo club “Split”. At the moment he is attending
the program of Callegari Institute for an interior stylist
in Split and, among all other things, he is involved in
graphic design well confirmed by his attractive web
site with Postirian kogule. Black-and-white photographs
of kogule (pebbles) are very good choice revealing a
desire for a documentary work by giving to one object
viewed as common and ordinary (at least for inhabitants
of Brač or maybe even tourists who rather look up
than down) an artistic dimension. A size of photographs
of 1x1.40 m also contributes to that very impression and
gives to kogule a decorative character.
A desire for shooting details is obvious on the photographs,
and through getting closer to the object kogule
(pebbles) seem to begin to live their own life invisible to
the eyesight. Value of the grasp is not, consequently,
only that a broader public get some knowledge about
the tradition of Postirian kogule (pebbles) but perhaps
– as it seems to me – to make Postirian people conscious
about significance and beauty of small or big,
round or uneven kogule they are daily walking on while
heading for work, market or home. After all, the preservation
of kogule depends on them. Photography
of Marin Šantić follows an old path that art appears
whenever and wherever one object viewed by all as
common and ordinary is took into consideration and
exposed in a new light. Regarding his other affinities it
is quite sure that we will be hearing from him not only in
the field of photography.
