language in accord with visions of prospective business
facility which is not “overemphasized”, not even regarding
its size or design or too costly material.
A classic brick construction is wrapped in a steel construction
with aluminium bars, than covered by panels of recycled
glass, additionally plastered and painted in white.
The front is ventilated with constant flow of the air as the
best thermo-isolator. The building is, due to its huge glass
surfaces, “bathing” in daily light throughout the day.
“Initially, I wanted that the look of the House of Light,
its minimalist aesthetic, became a story-teller what my
job was about, that our prospective clients would know
from the first sight what to expect. Owing to Andrija Rusan,
that vision became a reality”, says Skira.
The House of Light could be a shining milestone in the corporative
and landscaping architecture, in the design of
luxury houses and apartments... The intensity and colour
of the light is controlled and adjusted at the touch of a
button, and the building like a raw crystal is illuminating at
night in various shades, getting a surrealistic look.
But, real surprises are kept for visitors inside of the three
storeys building. On the ground storey there is a showroom
with an exhibition of professional and decorative
lightings of the most famous European producers like
iGuzzini, Flos, Catellani&Smith, Leucos, Viabizzuno and
others. On the first storey there is a designer studio in
which besides Dean Skira, four engineers and two designers
are working. On the last storey there is a hall for
education together with a demonstration centre for
presentation of projects; here, one can see all achievements
and ranges of architectural lightings, from changing
of colours to controlling the intensity of light. In the
House of Light, of total living space of 700 square metres,
there is installed everything already known in the world
of lighting industry.
We are speaking about merging of new technologies,
mechanical engineering, electronics and informatics in
one unique concept of light design, more and more integrated
into the architectural business.
Leaving for America
Dean Skira was born in 1962, in Kiseljak near Sarajevo; he
spent his childhood and youth in Pula, a home town of his
father. After finishing a high school, he failed his father’s
expectations and instead of commencing the Faculty
he left for – America. In New York, at the beginning, he
worked on various jobs for surviving through difficult times
and than commenced the Fashion Institute of Technology,
studying interior design. He specialised in lighting.
Along with his studies he worked in well established firms
for light systems design, in the country that at the time
was at least some ten years ahead of Europe in the field.
“Throughout those eight years in New York I was devoted
to - in theory and practice - architectural and landscaping
lighting. One client of mine, very satisfied with my
work, persuaded me to establish my own firm Lumenart
which operated successfully till the end of 1994 when I
decided to return to Croatia and to continue with the
same business – working on one computer in my bedroom
in the house in Premantura.
I have never been interested in theatre or disco lighting,
but I specialised in light design in architecture”. The firm
