The painting from Fiji
made in technique
of stamps
A table made in Brighton suited well to the kitchen and
the floor flagged by white stone, together with chairs
bought in an antique shop in France. A charming cupboard
from 1850 is also a fine piece of furniture, which
fits the chairs.
In the lounge there are beige leather upholstered threeseat
sofa and two armchairs as well as a thirty years old
ottoman, brought from the home in England. Walls of
the entire house are ornamented with paintings of a
Dubrovnikan artist Ms. Nikolina Šimunović whose art Ms.
Donna is enchanted by.
A stone stairway with cast iron hand-holds divides the
ground floor into the kitchen with dinning room and the
lounge leading to the first floor. On the top of the stairway
there is a niche with two 250 years old benches, upholstered
in silk; one of them was a chamber-pot once.
On the first floor there is a bedroom. Chinese night stands
bought in London are ornamented with drawings, and
above the bed there is a painting from Fiji made in technique
of stamps, which irresistible resembles a Konavle
fancy-work. A grand wall wardrobe is large enough and
invisible to hide everything inside. One part of the room
is marked as a “studio” with a couch and TV set. From
the balcony there is a view on the adjacent bell tower
and Cavtat small bay.
Minimalism is also well exposed in the white bathroom
with grey details. In the loft there are two rooms and a
bathroom. One room is in the Wenge style while the other
is dominated by the cast iron bed bought many years
ago in an antique shop.
From the first floor there is an exit to the garden at the
rear of the house. It took several trucks to drive away
piles and piles of garbage that the garden was choked
with, and to the owner’s great surprise they found a living
rock there.
The former water tank was transformed to a storage
room, and besides the garden with olive tree and Mediterranean
plants a terrace with a swimming pool found its
place, too. Here, the hosts can enjoy hidden from curious
eyes, and a special atmosphere is created in the evening
when Chinese lanterns are on. In front of the house there
is a terrace with a view on the Cavtat bay, covered with
a vine under which an old table with chairs from France
occupies the central position. Even details in the garden
of three storeys are antique. English grass is growing well
in the company of Mediterranean plants; oranges, lavender,
bogomile, olive tree and oleander. And, of course,
Donna and Jonathan enjoy in good company of their
new friends in Cavtat and morning coffee rituals in “their”
coffee bar. They are so delighted with Cavtat, crystal clear
sea and the beauty of the coast that whenever they go
home they already think when they will be back.
