welded joints in completed weldments. The extent of testing shall
be at the discretion of the Engineer but it is anticipated that 25% of
all butt welds and 10% of all fillet welded joints shall be tested by
non-destructive means.
If any sample fails a specified test the consignment which it
represents may be rejected in part or whole at the discretion of the
Engineer.
Major welds, where catastrophic collapse would follow weld failure,
shall be tested 100%.
The Main Contractor and Steelwork Sub-Contractor shall pay all
fees involved in testing unsatisfactory welds and repaired,
previously failed welds. The Employer shall pay all fees for all first
time tests that are accepted as satisfactory by the Engineer.
All areas of defective welding shall be cut out and made good to the
entire satisfaction of the Engineer and all costs for these remedial
measures shall be borne by the Main Contractor and Steelwork
Sub-Contractor. The remedial work shall be deemed to include
radiographical or other suitable examination to verify the
acceptability of the repair.
All slag shall be removed from welds to facilitate inspection.
The Steelwork Sub-Contractor shall give at least three days notice
of his intention to despatch any major welded component to site.
This stipulation is made in order that inspection can be carried out
on the weldment and analysis of test results completed prior to
despatch.
Non-destructive testing of welds shall be in accordance with the
following British Standard Specifications:-
