There are two forms of this test: Standard Compaction and Modified Compaction. When determining Maximum Dry Density, only Standard Compaction(AS1289.5.1.1-1993) is referred to in this document. Laboratory testing and fieldexperience has shown that the moisture-density relationships produced by theStandard Laboratory Compaction test correlates reasonably closely with mostchannel bank field compaction procedures using the fine grained cohesive soilstypical of earthen channel banks. Therefore the Standard Compaction test is usedfor compaction testing of earthen channel banks.Modified Compaction (AS1289.5.2.1-1993) is typically used for road pavementgravels and granular materials of low plasticity where high design loads will beencountered. The compactive effort for the modified test is more than four times asgreat as for the standard test and this yields a greater soil density.16.12.2 Field Dry DensityFor density control, it is necessary to determine soil density actually obtained in thefield and compare this with the specified soil density.Determination of field dry density can be carried out by direct or indirect methods.Direct methods measure actual density. These methods are specified in:AS1289.5.3.1-1993 Determination of the field density of a soil – Sand replacementmethod using a sand-cone pouring apparatusAS1289.5.3.2-1993 Determination of the field dry density of a soil – Sandreplacement method using a sand pouring can, with or withouta volume displacerAS1289.5.8.1-1995 Determination of field density and field moisture content of asoil using a nuclear surface moisture-density gauge – Directtransmission modeAS1289.5.3.5-1997 Determination of the field dry density of a soil – Waterreplacement methodIndirect methods provide an empirical measure of achieved density bymeasurement of another engineering property, principally shear strength. Themethods include those specified in:AS1289.6.3.2-1997 Soil strength and consolidation tests – Determination of thepenetration resistance of a soil – 9kg dynamic conepenetrometer testAS1289.6.3.3-1997 Soil strength and consolidation tests – Determination of thepenetration resistance of a soil – Perth sand penetrometer testAS1289.6.5.1-1999 Soil strength and consolidation tests – Determination of thestatic cone penetration resistance of a soil – Field test using amechanical and electrical cone or friction-cone penetrometerConstruction and Refurbishment of Earthen Channel Banks August 2002 - Edition 1.0 16-22
