More than 81 percent of theisland area is covered in ice, while its outer, fiord edge, issomewhat warmer. For this reason, almost all Greenlandinhabitants live on southwest fiords of Greenland andit’s Capitol Nuuk, where the climate is much friendlier. Most of Greenlanders are descendants of the Scandinaviantribes, Kalalit or Inuit. In the land of Eskimos thereare about 56 thousands inhabitants, mostly fishermenand renowned shrimp exporters. Just to show you howmuch ahead of the times Greenlanders really are, in1985 they voted yes on a referendum on leaving the EuropeanCommunity, today’s European Union. They areonce again starting a referendum asking for a greaterautonomy from Denmark, their main controller of foreignaffairs, defence and law enforcement.Life in the openIf you like to be on your own, Greenland is a place foryou. Thousands of kilometers of white will separate youfrom small oasises - cities and towns in civilization. Mountains, walleyes, rivers and huge ice mantles are the landscapeno matter where you look. Hikers find their challengeshere, along with exceptional beauties in everypart of the island. You can explore as a fisherman, sinceGreenland is also know as a fishermen’s paradise. Fish afew meters long can easily be caught and through a fishinghole in the ice you can watch sharks swim around.Greenland’s life in the open really offers a lot of thingsto do and see. The only challenge is discovering there isno road on the island. Therefore, to hop from one islandto another you need to rent a helicopter or a boat, whichmakes it an exciting journey. Many times these tripsturn into true spectacles, such as sightseeing the world’sbiggest ice sculpture park. While your boat sails in zigzaglines in order to get through those white giants, youcan touch them with you fingers and take photos. Incase you decide you want a different kind of journey, dogsledding is your next option. It is mostly made of 12dogs, carrying you faithfully through unknown lands. As47
