You can see whales justby standing on the street, even from your hotel roomwindow. During late summer and early fall whales swimclose to the shore and sometimes they’re even seen inports. Still, the best way to see whales is on the opensea. When you sail along the shore on a cruise ship thecaptain will stop the boat to make it easier for the passengersto watch those huge mammals. There are manydifferent kinds of whales in Greenland’s waters, but thelargest two are Blue Whale and Fin Whale. Also interestingare the seals, an estimated 2 million are living by theisland waters. Most of the tourists do not wait long for theirfirst encounter with Greenland animal, because here livemusk oxen, polar bears, moose, wolves and many smalleranimals and birds.Northern LightsNorthern Lights are an exceptional phenomenon thatforms when charged protons and electrons emitted fromthe sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field. When protons and electrons go back to molecules in theatmosphere, they create polar lights of different colors.Near to the Greenland town of Kangerlussuaq, there isscientific station for researching Northern Lights. Winterdark becomes midnight sun and becomes equally fascinating.During the week, the sun never rises abovehorizon, the landscape is completely white, while stars, moon and Northern Lights give light illuminate the snow. It’s been said that the Northern Lights are like a beautifuldream that never ends.Culture and HistoryGreenlanders are people that have never started a warnor took part in any. They are an exceptionally peacefulnation and people show extreme openness to visitors. Thenation consists of Inuit people, emigrants from Denmarkand other countries. 20 percent of them are born outsideof Greenland. Fishing seals, fish and whales is the main activityand makes up 95% of the total export industry and isa main source of income for 1/5 of the population. ManyInuit people, often called Eskimos, make their own kayaksfor fishing and transportation. Culture and tradition havealways been valued, so today in South Greenland wecan find well preserved ruins from Viking times (from 1000years ago) and also the ruins of the first Christian churchin the North American continent. Music and theatre arebased on the myths and sagas passed on in modern formand are very popular. One of the local attractions andtoday’s souvenirs are the Tupilaks, little grotesque figurinesmade of walrus teeth and moose horns. Many artiststoday make them in various shapes and with differentpersonalities. Because of today’s growing demand fordrinking water Greenland’s business people have comeup with the idea of selling water from Greenland and thearctic glaciers. Market research has shown that Japaneseand Americans show special interest in clean and originalwater from this island. Therefore, Greenlanders havedecided to brand and trademark their water in order to

In general, drinking water is Greenland’s most important resourceand today they are leaders in exporting ice and icecubes. Many believe that the business of selling fountainwater will become even more profitable.Bearing the brunt of great changesNumerous climate changes are catching up on the landof snow, icebergs and wild animals. Endless areas of eternalice are speedily melting. People in small villages previouslyused to scenes of slow and lazy iceberg slides, haverecently witnessed their surroundings to be full of floatingpieces of ice and small icebergs. Although icebergs arestill an astounding site, population has a hard time crossingthe bay. Dog sleds that used to drag sleighs all upto the middle of the bay, where the best and most abundantfish are found, now are not secure anymore and theice gets thinner each winter. Because of new changesmany are forced to change their habits and find newways of life. How did Greenland looked before the winterResearchers from University in Copenhagen are studyingDNA and other genetic material in order to find out informationon first people to inhabit Greenland. Legendhas it that a Scandinavian, Erik the Red discoveredGreenland after he was expelled from Iceland, butaccording to the new research the island was inhabitedeven 4500 years before this event. In order to studygenes, genetics, diseases and migration trends, researchersare studying prehistoric skeletons. By Isolating DNAsamples, they have learned that various insects andbutterflies lived in thick juniper and pine woods, even800,000 years ago. Also, they managed to prove thatclimate of South Greenland, today covered in ice thickerthan 2 kilometers, used to be much warmer and thearea used to be covered in dense woods. Greenlandoffers beautiful moments for all those in love with winter, adrenalin sports and life away from modern civilization. It fascinates and brings you close to some of the largestsea animals, it scares and raises the pulse by encounterswith glaciers, it mellows and seduces by gazing at NorthernLights. The cold you first experience when you getthere disappears very quickly when meeting peacefulGreenlanders and the whole island truly looks like onebig miracle of nature.49
