DRAFTCulvert Maintenance GuidanceThe Culvert Repair Program uses the Culvert Inventory and Inspection System (CIIS)data base. The system uses a rating scale similar to that used for bridges. Culverts areinspected annually, bi-annually, or every 4 years depending on condition. The CIIS listslarge culverts (5’ to 20’). Of the 8,192 culverts listed in CIIS, 597 have a GeneralRating of 3 or less. Most of those have a barrel rating of 3 or less. Improving conditionson these culverts should be a priority. There are 1,554 culverts rated less than 5.0 for a deficiency level of 19%. It is expectedthat a similar deficiency level exists for smaller pipes. The inventory of small pipes isestimated to be similar in magnitude to that of large pipes. The repair of small pipes issimilar to repair strategies for large pipes.Culvert Repair Objective Repair StrategiesLarge culverts with an overallcondition rating 3.0 or largeculverts with a barrel rating 3.0Repair deficiencies in culvertelements and/or structuralcondition resulting in a nondeficientasset.Highway DesignManual Chapter 8and EI 01-029Guide Rail Maintenance GuidanceThe entire guide rail system should be inspected annually. Damaged guide rail systemsshould be repaired as required. The goal is to repair damaged barrier to a functionalcondition within 2 weeks of discovery on high priority highways, within 3 weeks onmedium priority highways, and within 4 weeks on low priority highways. However, specific locations with historically frequent impacts on any highway should be assigneda higher priority in order to reduce the likelihood of a subsequent impact with nonfunctionalbarrier. All other defects not requiring extensive work or completereplacement of obsolete systems will be repaired while the work is being done. Thegoal is to repair impact attenuators within 2 weeks regardless of location or season.10
