It is recommended to use PRA toolsthroughout the process.Farmer ownership of action plans is a major outcome of PRDA and a crucial factorin its success since it is implemented by farmers with support from extensionorganizations or development NGOs. PRDA Manual 3Objectives of PRDA• identify the main limiting factors, how they are related and theopportunities for increased productivity and sustainability of anirrigated agricultural system;• evaluate extension and other supporting services provided to farmers;• identify practical steps and interventions to improve performance;• describe the main characteristics of selected irrigated agriculturalsystems in order to enable more extensive monitoring of performancein the future.How to use this manualThe Rapid Diagnosis and Action Planning for Irrigated Agricultural Systemsis explained in a practical manner. Chapter 2 summarizes the overall methodand different steps of the process. It also explains how it relates to training. InChapter 3 the constituents of irrigation systems are introduced and are usedthroughout the PRDA. Chapter 4 and chapter 5 give information for organizinga PRDA and some practical tips and advice to conduct a PRDA. The tools thatwill be used during the PRDA are described in annex A. People with previousPRA experience can use this annex as a revision exercise and develop checklistsfor interviews. Finally in annex B, a series of Reporting Sheets are provided towrite down and analyse results after fieldwork.
