Description of toolsTask analysis by genderWhyTo collect information, raise awareness <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> how household <strong>and</strong>community tasks are distributed according to gender. This information canalso be used to decide whom to target (male or female) with extension workor development interventions.How to1. Start by briefly introducing the purpose of the tool. Make sure that itis clear to everyone.2. Write down (or draw) different tasks on paper cards. Ask participantsto add cards for other activities that they find important.3. Ask participants to sort the cards into categories according to whogenerally performs a task - a man, a woman, or both. A start couldbe made with the cultivation of different irrigated <strong>and</strong> rainfed crops,e.g. rice, wheat, etc., then livestock keeping, then household tasks <strong>and</strong>lastly community tasks.4. Ask the group to analyse the workloads of men <strong>and</strong> women. Linkthe tasks <strong>and</strong> workloads to irrigation activities; focus the discussionon the constraints to <strong>and</strong> opportunities for participation by women.Considering the gender division of labour, who should be involved inirrigation planning activities?Example (Figure A6)
