It provides a general introduction to the topic and <strong>of</strong>fers a selective overview <strong>of</strong> thediversity <strong>of</strong> practices, styles and mediums. <strong>The</strong> course is organized geographically beginning withWest Africa; from the earliest evidence for sculptural traditions and the rise <strong>of</strong> centralized structures<strong>of</strong> authority, to the variety and richness <strong>of</strong> the artistic and material culture traditions found in thisregion. It proceeds on to Central and Southern African communities and concludes with someexamples <strong>of</strong> contemporary art practice and the ways in which the twentieth century has been a time <strong>of</strong>great change for visual culture in Africa.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE2061.Contemporary Chinese art (6 credits)This course examines the broad historical development <strong>of</strong> contemporary Chinese art in relation to itssocio-political contexts. Emphasis will be put on major exhibitions and artworks made and exhibitedat different stages <strong>of</strong> its development. In addition to stylistic characteristics, issues concerning artcensorship, art criticism and art market will be explored. Works made by local and cross-borderartists will be examined.Assessment: 100% coursework.Prerequisite: One 1000-level Fine Arts course.FINE2062.Land and garden in Chinese art (6 credits)This course examines the history and significance <strong>of</strong> land and its depiction in China from the fifth tothe twentieth century. We will examine the cultural circumstances that promoted landscape to one <strong>of</strong>the most important subjects in Chinese art. Emphasis is placed on historical and interpretive issuesthat are important to the analysis <strong>of</strong> artwork and meaning.Assessment: 100% coursework.FINE2065.Introduction to Islamic art and architecture (6 credits)Since the advent <strong>of</strong> Islam in 622 CE, people from a vast region from Spain to Central Asia, fromRussia to India and to Sub-Saharan Africa have constructed Muslim identities through artisticexpressions.
