290CORE COURSESSPAN1001.Spanish I.1 (6 credits)SPAN1001 is taught in the first semester and is intended for students who have no previousknowledge <strong>of</strong> Spanish. <strong>The</strong> main objective <strong>of</strong> the course is to teach students the basics <strong>of</strong> Spanishgrammar and to provide the participants with a firm foundation in the four language skills (reading,writing, listening and speaking) as well as to <strong>of</strong>fer insights into Spanish culture. Based on guidelinesset out by the Common European Framework <strong>of</strong> Reference for Languages (CEFRL), the courseshould lead students towards a basic and relatively autonomous use <strong>of</strong> the language, equivalent to anA1 level. Classes will be conducted in small groups in order to ensure a high degree <strong>of</strong> interactionbetween students and teachers. Tutorial groups will also be arranged separately to further practicelanguage skills and students will be expected to actively participate in the classroom setting.Prerequisite:Assessment:Nil100% coursework. Coursework includes: i) progress tests, ii) other assignments andiii) participation in class.SPAN1002.Spanish I.2 (6 credits)SPAN1002 is taught in the second semester and is a continuation <strong>of</strong> SPAN1001. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> thecourse is to consolidate the knowledge acquired in the first semester and broaden participants’foundation in Spanish in the four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Based onthe guidelines set out by the Common European Framework <strong>of</strong> Reference for Languages (CEFRL),the course should lead students towards a more independent and autonomous use <strong>of</strong> the language,equivalent to an A2 level. Classes will be conducted in small groups in order to ensure a high degree<strong>of</strong> interaction between students and teachers. Tutorial groups will also be arranged separately t<strong>of</strong>urther practice language skills and students will be expected to actively participate in the classroomsetting.Prerequisite:Assessment:Students wishing to be admitted to SPAN1002 without having previously completedSPAN1001. Spanish I.1 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through theHead <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.100% coursework. Coursework includes: i) progress tests, ii) participation in class,iii) a brief oral test and iv) other assignments.SPAN2001.Spanish II.1 (6 credits)This course continues to build on the previous <strong>year</strong>s’ work by helping students to develop Spanishspeaking, reading and writing to an intermediate level. <strong>The</strong> intention is to lead participants towardsthe acquisition <strong>of</strong> the Spanish language at a level that allows them to communicate effectively in tasksrequiring a direct exchange <strong>of</strong> information on familiar and routine matters encountered in work,school, leisure, etc. through the study <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> documents (written and audiovisual) and thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> communicative activities. This course follows a task-based approach withexplicit attention to the formal aspects <strong>of</strong> language.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to SPAN2001. Spanish II.1 must have completedSPAN1002. Spanish I.2. Students wishing to be admitted to SPAN2001 withouthaving previously completed SPAN1002. Spanish I.2 will be required to satisfy theFaculty Board through the Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Culturesthat they have attained elsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% coursework. Coursework includes: i) progress tests, ii) other assignments, andiii) participation in class.
