194CORE COURSESEUST1010.Foundations <strong>of</strong> European Studies (6 credits)This first <strong>year</strong> course serves as an introduction to European Studies. It is a core requirement forstudents wishing to major in European Studies, but it is also suitable for anyone seeking a broadunderstanding <strong>of</strong> European society and culture. <strong>The</strong> course examines the forces which have led toEurope becoming increasingly integrated (not the least being the sheer devastation <strong>of</strong> two world wars)as well as the subsequent tensions and objections to that process. We study the processes andstructures <strong>of</strong> the specific institutions <strong>of</strong> the European Union and the Council <strong>of</strong> Europe as well assome <strong>of</strong> the major issues confronting the EU now. We will also look at some major Europeandomestic concerns as well as divergent foreign policy issues between Europe and the US. <strong>The</strong>approach is multidisciplinary, embracing politics, economics, history, culture and religion.Assessment: 50% coursework, 50% examinationEUST2010.European identity (6 credits)This course, which is required <strong>of</strong> all European Studies majors in their second <strong>year</strong>, will introducestudents to the linkages between modern Europe, its historical foundations and its various nationalidentities. Issues <strong>of</strong> identity will include history, politics, society, languages, religion and culturefrom the ancient to contemporary periods. Each week we will concentrate on one country. We will beasking the question ‘What are the major characteristics <strong>of</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> a particular country?’ That is notan easy or straightforward question and we will explore why the question is itself something <strong>of</strong> aproblem.Assessment: 100% courseworkEUST2020.European Studies in Europe (6 credits)(This course is <strong>of</strong>fered to European Studies majors only.)This summer course, conducted for three weeks in Europe, is <strong>of</strong>fered to European Studies majorsbetween their second and third <strong>year</strong>s <strong>of</strong> study. This course gives students a direct experience <strong>of</strong> theculture and politics <strong>of</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> Europe. In addition to visiting a number <strong>of</strong> European countries we willbe visiting key political European institutions in Brussels and Strasburg, and attending lectures bytheir representatives. We will also be hearing lectures from political analysts, university lecturers andrepresentatives <strong>of</strong> other organizations. <strong>The</strong>re will also be a range <strong>of</strong> cultural activities includingvisiting historical sites, museums and art galleries.Prerequisite: EUST1010. Foundations <strong>of</strong> European Studies AND EUST2010. EuropeanidentityAssessment: 100% courseworkEUST3010.European political and economic institutions and processes (6 credits)This course, which is required <strong>of</strong> all European Studies majors in their third <strong>year</strong>, will furtherfamiliarise students with the major international economic and political institutions in Europe such asthe European Union and NATO. <strong>The</strong> organisation <strong>of</strong> the institutions will be explored along with theprocesses by which decisions are made and changes can be introduced. Included in the syllabus willbe an examination <strong>of</strong> Europe in the international setting. Taught within a seminar type framework,students will be encouraged to select, in consultation with a staff member, subject areas within thearea <strong>of</strong> focus for deeper examination.Assessment: 100% coursework
