Exercises accompanythe topics introduced. Example analyses are drawn from various languages. <strong>The</strong> following topics inmorphology and syntax will be covered: words, morphemes and morphs, word classes, immediateconstituents, phrase structure, functional relations, sentence structure. <strong>The</strong> course provides agrounding in grammatical concepts useful for further study in grammatical theory, typology andlanguage teaching.Prerequisite: LING1000Assessment: 100% coursework.LING2056.Sociolinguistics (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course introduces students to the study <strong>of</strong> the relationship between language and society. Duringthe course we cover the following topics: fundamentals <strong>of</strong> language variation and change,multilingualism and language contact, language maintenance, shift and death, language planning,policy and education, and linguistic landscapes. <strong>The</strong> course has both theoretical and empirical content;in terms <strong>of</strong> the former, we focus in particular on evolutionary theories <strong>of</strong> language and usage-basedapproaches; as for the latter, we focus on the study <strong>of</strong> Asian contexts, in particular China, South andSoutheast Asia through ethnographic methods. <strong>The</strong> course includes an active fieldwork component onsociolinguistic issues in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. <strong>The</strong> course satisfies the prerequisite for the advanced course,Languages in Contact.
