287PORT2002.Portuguese II.2 (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> PORT2001. Portuguese II.1. <strong>The</strong> intention is to build further on thejunior level work and widen the scope <strong>of</strong> exposure to more complex aspects <strong>of</strong> the language. <strong>The</strong>teaching will diversify through the use <strong>of</strong> more elaborate material and a variety <strong>of</strong> teaching techniquesincluding work with video. Participants are expected to consolidate their understanding <strong>of</strong> Portugueselanguage. All students continuing their studies in the third <strong>year</strong> are strongly encouraged to attend asummer intensive immersion course in a Portuguese-speaking country.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to PORT2002 without having previously completedPORT2001. Portuguese II.1 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board throughthe Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% courseworkPORT3001.Portuguese III.1 (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> PORT2002. Portuguese II.2. Participants develop their ability todeal with non-routine information using lexical inference and compensating strategies such asrestructuring, circumlocution and substitution in order to successfully accomplish communicativetasks. A variety <strong>of</strong> written, audio and video materials will serve as a basis for study and discussion onissues pertinent to life in Portugal and in other Lusophone areas.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to PORT3001 without having previously completedPORT2002. Portuguese II.2 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board throughthe Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% courseworkPORT3002.Portuguese III.2 (6 credits)This course is a continuation <strong>of</strong> PORT3001. Portuguese III.1. Participants are expected to furtherdevelop their ability to deal with non-routine information as well as their awareness <strong>of</strong> languageregisters and social conventions. <strong>The</strong> intention is to lead participants towards an advancedunderstanding <strong>of</strong> the Portuguese language. Learning activities include the study <strong>of</strong> articles and reportsabout contemporary issues expressing a particular viewpoint and production <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> text types,including small research projects and short essays.Prerequisites: Students wishing to be admitted to PORT3002 without having previously completedPORT3001. Portuguese III.1 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board throughthe Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% courseworkELECTIVE COURSESStudents are encouraged to take the following elective courses during their studies <strong>of</strong> the language.PORT2221.Portuguese reading course (6 credits)This course will introduce students to the literature <strong>of</strong> the Portuguese- speaking countries throughreading, analysis and discussion <strong>of</strong> a selection <strong>of</strong> texts from twentieth-century and contemporaryauthors. <strong>The</strong> course will be conducted in Portuguese and it is recommended for students with goodbasic knowledge <strong>of</strong> the language who wish to improve their ability to read, speak and write.
