Spanish II.2 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through theHead <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.100% courseworkSPAN3026Spanish in Latin America and bilingualism in the U.S. (6 credits)This course is taught in the first semester and it intends to build upon the general Spanish languagecourses by providing a more in-depth study <strong>of</strong> the features that characterise the Spanish varietiesspoken in Latin America and the U.S. Students will be exposed to a wide range <strong>of</strong> language samplesfrom different typologies (written, audio, video...) belonging to the main dialect areas in LatinAmerica and the Spanish spoken by U.S. Latinos. By the end <strong>of</strong> the course students will be able tounderstand different regional varieties <strong>of</strong> Spanish in context and will be able to communicateefficiently with speakers <strong>of</strong> a wider range <strong>of</strong> varieties <strong>of</strong> Spanish. This course will also contribute tohelp students gain a better understanding <strong>of</strong> the linguistic diversity <strong>of</strong> Spanish as well asgeographically locate the countries where Spanish is spoken. As a consequence, students will be ableto broaden their horizons in terms <strong>of</strong> employability and the possibility <strong>of</strong> further experiential learningand work in Spanish-speaking regions other than Spain.Prerequisite: This course is open to students who have successfully completed SPAN2002.Spanish II.2 and are currently enrolled in SPAN3001.Spanish III.1. Studentswishing to be admitted to SPAN32026 without having previously completedSPAN2002. Spanish II.2 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through theHead <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attainedelsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% courseworkSPAN3119.Overseas immersion language course - Spanish (6 credits)This course provides an opportunity to study Spanish and to experience linguistic and culturalimmersion in a partner institution located in a Spanish-speaking country. <strong>The</strong> course usually takesplace during the summer months (e.g., June, July and/or August) and the duration <strong>of</strong> the stay mayvary from two weeks to one month, but must include at least 60 hours <strong>of</strong> formal class tuition. Studentstypically take part in this course after the completion <strong>of</strong> their second <strong>year</strong> <strong>of</strong> language studies at HKU.<strong>The</strong> course is designed to build on and to reinforce the language competence acquired during theprevious <strong>year</strong>s <strong>of</strong> study as well as to prepare the participants for more advanced work in the final<strong>year</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the <strong>programme</strong>.<strong>The</strong> aims and objectives <strong>of</strong> this course are as follows: i. to expand the participants’ pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in allaspects <strong>of</strong> the language; ii. to <strong>of</strong>fer a first-hand cultural and linguistic experience <strong>of</strong> the environmentwhere the language is spoken; iii. to better prepare the participants for more advanced work upon theirreturn.Prerequisite:Assessment:Students must have completed SPAN2002. Spanish II.2. Students wishing to beadmitted to SPAN3119 without having previously completed SPAN2002. SpanishII.2 will be required to satisfy the Faculty Board through the Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong>Modern Languages and Cultures that they have attained elsewhere the requiredstandard.In order to be granted credits for this course, participants are requested to check with theteacher in charge prior to their enrolment and departure whether the course they havechosen is suitable for the purpose and, after completing <strong>of</strong> the course, (1) to produce aformal statement <strong>of</strong> attendance and certified transcript bearing mention <strong>of</strong> the finalgrade(s) obtained from the host institution, as well as the level attained according to theCommon European Framework <strong>of</strong> Reference for Languages (CEFRL); (2) to provide a
