Students will also be expected toundertake and maintain a logbook that documents independent practice sessions, either alone or withother participants, and individual progress.Assessment: 100% coursework.Advanced Courses:AFRI2007.African Nobel Laureates in literature (6 credits)This course introduces students to the literature <strong>of</strong> Africa by way <strong>of</strong> its Nobel Prize-winning authors.It is intended that by studying what may be regarded as the very best literature <strong>of</strong> the continent thatthe student will begin, first, to appreciate the rich cultural history <strong>of</strong> the continent; second, toappreciate the complex social and political composition <strong>of</strong> the continent; and, thereby, to develop aninformed sensitivity towards the diversity <strong>of</strong> African thought.Assessment: 100% coursework.AFRI3002.Africa studies workshop (6 credits)This course involves attending seminars and workshops on advanced topics in African Studies(including history, literature, linguistics, education, music, law, science, technology, and internationalrelations) by leading Africanist scholars.Prerequisite: AFRI1001.Assessment: 100% courseworkAFRI3005.Africa-China relations (6 credits)In recent <strong>year</strong>s, Africa and China have renewed their relations to include frequent <strong>of</strong>ficial visits bytop-level government <strong>of</strong>ficials between Beijing and the various African capitals, increased trade andeconomic relations, and more especially, increased interactions between ordinary Africans andChinese. <strong>The</strong>re are now growing Chinese communities in Africa and growing African communitiesin China. This course, based on contemporary research findings by the instructor and by visitingpr<strong>of</strong>essors, will introduce students to the dynamics and consequences <strong>of</strong> these closer relationships andinteractions. Students will be expected to do a field project on an African community in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>,Macau or mainland China.Assessment: 100% coursework.Capstone Courses:Students Minoring in African Studies should choose one <strong>of</strong> these courses:AFRI4001.Field trip to an African country (6 credits)In this course, students will be led by an experienced faculty member on a supervised two-weekeducational field trip to an African country, such as Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon, andMauritius. <strong>The</strong> rationale is to closely observe and study an aspect <strong>of</strong> Africa introduced in one <strong>of</strong> thecourses on Africa Studies or in a related course. Leading up to the field trip, students must participatein three weeks <strong>of</strong> intensive preparation in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. After returning to <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>, students will berequired to attend class meetings over one week. In addition, students will also be required to
