What are corpora? How could a (prospective) researcher investigatelanguage-related issues with corpora? This course will present the foundations <strong>of</strong> corpus linguistics.To give you a flavour <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> corpora (e.g. the British National Corpus) and corpus explorationtools (e.g. WordSmith) and the statistics package SPSS in language studies, it will take the form <strong>of</strong>unconventional lectures (with live demonstrations <strong>of</strong> online corpus-linguistic resources) along withpracticals (your turn!). Of course, no familiarity with computing is assumed.Prerequisite: LING1000Assessment: 100% coursework.LING3127.Phonology: An introduction to the study <strong>of</strong> sound systems (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> the course is to introduce students to the basic concepts in phonology and variousphonological systems <strong>of</strong> human languages. Students acquire experience in analyzing language dataand formulating phonological rules.Prerequisite: LING1000 and LING2004Assessment: 100% coursework.LING3130.Morphological theory (6 credits)This course is an introduction to morphological theory which deals with the structure <strong>of</strong> words. <strong>The</strong>course <strong>of</strong>fers an introduction to some <strong>of</strong> the current models <strong>of</strong> morphology, including ParadigmFunction Morphology, Prosodic Morphology and Optimality <strong>The</strong>ory, among others, and considershow morphology interacts with other fields <strong>of</strong> linguistics such as syntax, semantics and phonology.Prerequisite: LING1000Assessment: 100% coursework.LING3132.Syntactic theory (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> course explores recent theoretical approaches to syntax, focusing on generative grammar.Prerequisite: LING1000 and LING2050Assessment: 100% coursework.LING3134.Psycholinguistics (6 credits)This course is an introduction to psycholinguistics and will examine issues concerning how languageis acquired and processed in the mind. Essential concepts <strong>of</strong> the mental processes involved inlanguage comprehension and production and contemporary research will be covered in this course.<strong>The</strong>re will also be practical laboratory classes.Prerequisite: LING1000 and LING2048Assessment: 100% coursework.
