Japanese language III (Part 1)Assessment: 100% coursework (test, quizzes, presentation and homework)CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE COURSEJAPN4101.Japanese Studies research project (6 credits)<strong>The</strong> Japanese Studies research project will allow students to pursue independent research under thesupervision <strong>of</strong> a Japanese Studies teacher. <strong>The</strong> seminar is designed to provide students with theopportunity to explore in depth a topic related to Japanese Studies. <strong>The</strong>y may choose to adopt adisciplinary approach (e.g. history, literature, anthropology) or engage in a multi-disciplinaryapproach, depending on the nature <strong>of</strong> the question or issue <strong>of</strong> inquiry. This is the capstone seminar forthe Japan Studies <strong>programme</strong> in the Japanese Studies major.Prerequisite: JAPN2101. Japanese Studies: Cultures and critiquesAssessment: 100% coursework (presentations, essay assignments, etc.)INTERDISCIPLINARY ELECTIVE COURSES<strong>The</strong>re are three types <strong>of</strong> courses in the elective pool:I. English language medium courses <strong>of</strong>fered in the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and CulturesII. Japanese language medium courses <strong>of</strong>fered in the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and CulturesIII. English language medium courses <strong>of</strong>fered in other Schools and Faculties{Notes:1. Not all courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in a given semester; students should check with individual units oncourse availability; students should also check on course prerequisites and other enrollmentrestrictions.2. From the interdisciplinary elective list, students should select no more than 18 credits <strong>of</strong>introductory courses for the major and not more than 12 credits <strong>of</strong> introductory courses for theminor. It is particularly concerned with the native notion <strong>of</strong> kaisha(corporations), the managerial control and institutional culture <strong>of</strong> Japanese companies, and deals withsuch varied topics as Japanese ways <strong>of</strong> organizing work, ranking system, compensation system,promotion system, managerial control and institutional culture. <strong>The</strong> course is open to both secondandthird-<strong>year</strong> Japanese Studies students, as well as to students from other departments and facultieswho may have an academic interest in its contents.Assessment: 100% coursework (group projects and final essays)
