61ENGL3037.Research seminar in language and society (6 credits)This course is designed for students who wish to pursue advanced work in the study <strong>of</strong> language andsociety. This course is open to third and fourth <strong>year</strong> students only. Students are normally expected tohave prior knowledge in the subject area and should consult individual seminar co-ordinators beforeregistering for the course. <strong>The</strong>re will be no formal lectures. Students will meet regularly with theirtutor for guidance but they will also be required to work independently. <strong>The</strong>y will be expected to takethe initiative in locating and evaluating primary and secondary sources research materials.Assessment: 100% coursework (written essay or project).ENGL3039.Research seminar in cross-cultural studies in English (6 credits)This course is designed for students majoring or minoring in Cross-Cultural Studies in English whowish to pursue advanced work. This course is open to third and fourth <strong>year</strong> students only, andstudents should consult the co-ordinator <strong>of</strong> the major before registering for the course. <strong>The</strong>re will beno formal lectures. Students will meet regularly with their tutor for guidance but they will also berequired to work independently. <strong>The</strong>y will be expected to take the initiative in locating and evaluatingprimary and secondary sources research materials.Assessment: 100% coursework (written essay or project).ENGL3040.Internship in English studies (6 credits)This course <strong>of</strong>fers students a capstone learning experience by allowing them to take their classroomknowledge into the community. Students will have an opportunity for experiential learning, earncredits toward their degree, and engage in a rich experience while working in an organization thatdemonstrates a real impact on society. <strong>The</strong> internship experience draws on previous coursework toencourage students to apply their classroom knowledge to work in organizations that demonstrate theimpact <strong>of</strong> using English in the community. Students can choose to apply for an internship at one <strong>of</strong> theestablished organizations below or pursue another internship venue with an organization <strong>of</strong> theirchoice. Arrangements should be made, under the guidance <strong>of</strong> the course supervisor, with theorganization before the second semester <strong>of</strong> the students’ final <strong>year</strong>. <strong>The</strong> student must pass aninterview with the organization before being allowed to register for this course. <strong>The</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> theinternship will depend on the arrangement between the student and the organization, but shouldinvolve at least 40 contact hours <strong>of</strong> service for the organization. Assessment will be based on a writtenreport as well as feedback from the organization contact.Assessment: 100% coursework.ENGL3041.Senior colloquium in English studies (6 credits)This course is designed as a capstone course <strong>of</strong>fering students an opportunity to integrate and reflectupon what they have learned in the major while focusing on current topics and critical debates inEnglish studies. Students are expected to be able to build on courses they have taken before andshould consult individual colloquium co-ordinators before registering for the course. <strong>The</strong>re will be n<strong>of</strong>ormal lectures but weekly meetings for the discussion <strong>of</strong> texts and issues, led by students.Assessment will be based on contributions to colloquium discussions and a final essay.Assessment: 100% coursework.
