296<strong>of</strong> filmmaking: they will have to create a digital story to experiment with the pre-production,production and post-production phases <strong>of</strong> a short filmed story <strong>of</strong> 3-5 minutes combining images andsound. <strong>The</strong> course is intended for students who are at a B1-B2 level or higher <strong>of</strong> the CommonEuropean Framework <strong>of</strong> Reference for Languages. Reading, writing, oral and listening skills areequally practiced and an interactive approach is followed in order to ensure students’ activeinvolvement in their learning process.Prerequisite: (i) This course is open to students who have successfully completed SPAN3001.Spanish III.1 and are currently enrolled in SPAN3002. Spanish III.2.(ii) Students wishing to be admitted to SPAN3023 without having previouslycompleted SPAN3001. Spanish III.1 will be required to satisfy the FacultyBoard through the Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Modern Languages and Cultures thatthey have attained elsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% coursework. Coursework includes: i) a written test (30%), ii) a digital story(40%) and iii) weekly assignments (30%).SPAN3024.Spanish for business II (6 credits)This course builds on the subjects and skills covered in the course Spanish for Business I at a moreadvanced level. It aims to further prepare students to interact effectively with Spanish-speakingcommercial or governmental institutions. It also introduces new topics such as product promotion andpublicity, oral and written business transactions (<strong>of</strong>fers, requests, complaints, etc.), bankingtransactions, major Spanish and Latin American companies, natural resources and existing forums forconducting business exchanges with the Spanish-speaking world. Audiovisual materials are usedthroughout the course. A number <strong>of</strong> short internships in Spanish-speaking companies and institutionsare arranged, to give students the opportunity to learn outside the classroom environment. Guestspeakers from Spanish-speaking institutions and companies located in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> are regularlyinvited to visit the classes.Prerequisite: SPAN3024 is open to students who have successfully completed SPAN2024.Spanish for business I, or equivalent and are currently enrolled inSPAN3001.Spanish III.1. Students wishing to be admitted to SPAN3024.withouthaving previously completed SPAN2024. Spanish for business I, or equivalent, willbe required to satisfy the Faculty Board through the Head <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> ModernLanguages and Cultures that they have attained elsewhere the required standard.Assessment: 100% courseworkSPAN3025.Spanish-American cultures and civilizations (6 credits)This course adds a New World dimension to the already existing courses on Spanish language andculture currently on <strong>of</strong>fer. It focuses on the Spanish-speaking countries <strong>of</strong> Latin America (México,Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panamá, República Dominicana, PuertoRico, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile)where Spanish is also the <strong>of</strong>ficial language (19 <strong>of</strong> the 21 Spanish-speaking countries in the world arelocated in central and south America). <strong>The</strong> course will explore different aspects <strong>of</strong> their cultures andcivilizations, from the discovery <strong>of</strong> America and the establishment <strong>of</strong> colonies to the fight forindependence and the development <strong>of</strong> the different nations. Topics will include history (from Pre-Columbian civilizations up to contemporary developments), geography, politics, economy, society, artand traditions <strong>of</strong> a selected number <strong>of</strong> countries. <strong>The</strong>se will be examined with a view towardsunderstanding contemporary cultural patterns and their historical antecedents.Teaching materials will be in Spanish and medium <strong>of</strong> instruction will be Spanish.Prerequisite: This course is open to students who have successfully completed SPAN2002.Spanish II.2 and are currently enrolled in SPAN3001.Spanish III.1.
