250MODERN CHINA STUDIESModern China Studies is an interdisciplinary <strong>programme</strong> aimed at giving students a broad-basededucation on modern China—its language, culture, history, society, economy, governance,environment, and people. <strong>The</strong> <strong>programme</strong> combines the perspectives and curricular strengths <strong>of</strong> avariety <strong>of</strong> disciplines, including literature, linguistics, art history, history, philosophy, religion,anthropology, sociology, geography, politics, economics, journalism and communications. Graduateswill be prepared to enter a wide range <strong>of</strong> careers in the public and private sectors in which acomprehensive and sophisticated understanding <strong>of</strong> China is essential to success.Modern China Studies is ideal for students whose interest in China crosses over disciplinary divides,as well as for international students who would like to learn the Chinese language and pursue a majoror minor in China studies. It is also an ideal second major or minor for those pursuing degrees in law,medicine, education, business, journalism, and social work.Prospective majors and minors in Modern China Studies must pass the prerequisite courseMCSP1001 in either their first or second <strong>year</strong>s (Introductory Years). Prospective majors are alsorequired to pass the language requirement in their Introductory Years, either by:1. completing CHIN9501 and/or CHIN9502, subject to their level <strong>of</strong> Chinese languagepr<strong>of</strong>iciency; or2. demonstrating the required level <strong>of</strong> Chinese language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency (by presenting evidence thatthey had graduated from a Chinese-medium secondary school, or studied Chinese languagefor a minimum <strong>of</strong> three <strong>year</strong>s prior to matriculation, or passed Level 2 <strong>of</strong> the ChineseLanguage Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Test (HSK).<strong>The</strong> MajorA major in Modern China Studies consists <strong>of</strong> 72 credits with the following components:• Prerequisite course (6 credits):MCSP1001. China: the long twentieth century (6 credits)• Other Arts Faculty introductory courses to be take from any Arts <strong>programme</strong>s (12credits)• Core courses (12 credits):MCSP2001. China in the world: from Sinology to China studies (6 credits)MCSP2002. China in the world: critical paradigms (6 credits) Students may take the above courses in the first and second <strong>year</strong>s (Introductory Years)• Interdisciplinary elective Courses (36 credits):Elective courses totally 36 credits as listed below• Capstone experience course (6 credits):MCSP3001: Modern China Studies research project (6 credits) This course will be <strong>of</strong>fered to undergraduates in their third and fourth <strong>year</strong>s.NB 1: <strong>The</strong> capstone course designed to allow students to advance their analytical thinking bypermitting the application <strong>of</strong> disciplinary knowledge and principles learned in the earlier<strong>year</strong>s.NB 2: Students may take Introductory Level courses at any point in their degree.
