150(II) MINOR IN GENERAL LINGUISTICSA minor in General Linguistics shall consist <strong>of</strong> LING1000, 2 Introductory courses and 3 Advancedcourses from the <strong>programme</strong>, totaling 36 credits. As a prerequisite, students are required to passLING1000.(III) MAJOR IN HUMAN LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGYWhat is Human Language Technology?Human Language Technology (HLT) is a relatively new discipline that investigates two main issues.On the one hand it explores the theoretical and practical issues surrounding the ability to gettechnology, especially modern information communications technology (ICT), to interact withhumans using natural language capabilities. On the other hand, it is a discipline that investigates howtechnologies, especially ICTs, can serve as useful adjuncts to humans in language understanding,including analysis, processing, storage and retrieval. This investigation could lead to practicalapplications, including the design <strong>of</strong> online learning environments for language learning andmultilingual retrieval for automatic translation.Aims and Objectives:<strong>The</strong> following are some <strong>of</strong> the objectives <strong>of</strong> the proposed <strong>programme</strong>: (1) to give students aperspective <strong>of</strong> how technology relates to human language processing; (2) to understand howinformation communications technology has been applied to different aspects <strong>of</strong> Linguistics andhuman language processing and to what effect; (3) to critically evaluate the role <strong>of</strong> technology inhuman language processing; and (4) to examine the range <strong>of</strong> opportunities available to differentpr<strong>of</strong>essionals regarding the application <strong>of</strong> technology in human language processing.Components <strong>of</strong> the Programme:Students majoring in HLT are required to complete a prerequisite course (LING1000) and 12 credits<strong>of</strong> introductory courses from any Arts <strong>programme</strong>(s) in the first <strong>year</strong>, and 54 credits <strong>of</strong> the <strong>programme</strong>in the subsequent <strong>year</strong>s. <strong>The</strong>se 54 credits consist <strong>of</strong> 12 credits <strong>of</strong> core courses (LING2004 ANDLING2050) normally taken in the second <strong>year</strong>, a 6-credit capstone course (LING4001 OR LING4002OR LING4003) taken in the third or fourth <strong>year</strong>, and 36 credits <strong>of</strong> advanced courses listed below:Advanced Linguistics courses for HLT Major:LING3101LING3103LING3111LING3112LING3118LING3127LING3130LING3132LING3141Computational linguistics (6 credits)Semantics: meaning and grammar (6 credits)Language and literacy in the information age (6 credits)Experimental phonetics (6 credits)Lexical-functional grammar (6 credits)Phonology: An introduction to the study <strong>of</strong> sound systems (6 credits)Morphological theory (6 credits)Syntactic theory (6 credits)Language and information technology (6 credits)
