82SCHOOL OF HUMANITIESAFRICAN STUDIES<strong>The</strong> African Studies Programme at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts Minor inAfrican Studies, through which students can explore Africa as a study area from interdisciplinaryperspectives.To obtain a Minor in African Studies students are required to take AFRI1001 “Foundations in AfricanStudies” or CCGL9013 “Globalization: African experiences”, 12 credits from introductory courses,12 credits from advanced courses and 6 credits from the capstone experience totaling 36 credits. <strong>The</strong>courses FINE2057 and LING3152 are also counted towards the introductory and advanced creditsrequired in the minor respectively. Please refer to the Fine Arts and Linguistics syllabi for details.Courses within the African Studies Programme are open to all <strong>BA</strong> students and also to students inother faculties.Pre-requisite Courses:AFRI1001.Foundations in African studies (6 credits)This course will present a basic outline <strong>of</strong> Africa’s geographic location, its political map, history,languages, peoples, cultures, musics, literatures, etc. It will deal with contemporary issues affectingAfrica such as the demands <strong>of</strong> nation-building, economic challenges, social and political conflict,health issues, sports, etc, and end with a survey <strong>of</strong> Africa and its relations to the outside world.Assessment: 100% coursework.Introductory CoursesAFRI2003.Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency course in an African language X (6 credits)Depending on staff and tutor availability, a selection <strong>of</strong> beginners’ courses in African languages likeSwahili, Hausa, Akan, and Dagaare will be <strong>of</strong>fered during the summer. Students going to a particularAfrican country in connection with AFRI2001 must learn a language spoken in the area <strong>of</strong> Africa theyare scheduled to go to.Assessment: 100% coursework.AFRI2004.Introduction to African linguistics (6 credits)This course will cover basic aspects <strong>of</strong> the phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics <strong>of</strong> majorAfrican languages, such as vowel harmony, tone, click sounds, the noun class system, verbalextensions, serial verbs, and other complex constructions. Some sociolinguistic features about variousregions in Africa will also be included.Assessment: 100% coursework.AFRI2006.African music (6 credits)This course will introduce various music cultures and traditions from Africa. <strong>The</strong> course emphasizesthe acquisition <strong>of</strong> basic skills and knowledge <strong>of</strong> the djembe and gahu drum ensembles from Senegaland Ghana, respectively. Lectures will discuss the music and cultural context <strong>of</strong> various musical andperformance genres from Western, Southern and Eastern Africa. This will include the griot tradition,
