210HKGS2002.<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> identities in local, national and global contexts (6 credits)This course is required <strong>of</strong> all students intending to major or minor in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Studies. HKGS2002explores the creation <strong>of</strong> a uniquely <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> identity and the contested notions <strong>of</strong> this identity frominside and outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. Core aspects <strong>of</strong> local identity markers are examined.<strong>The</strong> course aims to instill in students a deep appreciation <strong>of</strong> the evolution and transformation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong><strong>Kong</strong>'s identity in a global and national context. HKGS2002 explores the creation <strong>of</strong> a uniquely <strong>Hong</strong><strong>Kong</strong> identity and the contested notions <strong>of</strong> this identity from inside and outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>. At theend <strong>of</strong> this course students will have developed foundational knowledge in the politics <strong>of</strong> identityformation in the context <strong>of</strong> changing political milieus.Prerequisite: HKGS1001Assessment: 100% courseworkCAPSTONE EXPERIENCE COURSEHKGS2003.<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Studies research project (6 credits)This course is required <strong>of</strong> all students intending to major in <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Studies Students in thiscourse pursue independent research and produce a research paper under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a teacher in<strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong> Studies. This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore indepth a topic <strong>of</strong> interest to them in relation to <strong>Hong</strong> <strong>Kong</strong>’s development and position in the world. Itcan either adopt a single disciplinary methodology or a multidisciplinary problem-orientedperspective. Students undertaking the course will negotiate the topic in conjunction with the<strong>programme</strong> coordinator to determine its feasibility and ensure academic rigor. This course is thecapstone course for the major.Prerequisite: HKGS2001Assessment: 100% courseworkINTERDICIPLINARY ELECTIVE COURSESMajors must select courses totaling 36 credits from the following list <strong>of</strong> electives.Minors must select courses totaling 18 credits from the following list <strong>of</strong> electives.In order to maintain the interdisciplinary academic focus <strong>of</strong> the major/minor students must completeat least:6 credits from courses coded CLIT or ENGL, and6 credits from courses coded HIST or HKGS and6 credits from courses coded either POLI or SOCI{Notes:1. Not all courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in a given semester; students should check with individual units oncourse availability; students should also check on course prerequisites and other enrollmentrestrictions.2. From the interdisciplinary elective list, students should select no more than 18 credits <strong>of</strong> introductory coursesfor the major and not more than 12 credits <strong>of</strong> introductory courses for the minor.
