Inspiring Leadership in Immigrant CommunitiesJanuary 2003Chapter 4Training Unit—Public Speaking§ 4.1 IntroductionThis session is designed to help the leaders improve their public speaking skills. Although theleaders will be practicing their public speaking on specific issues, the goal of this session is tohelp them improve their public speaking ability no matter the issue on which they speak. Forpurposes of this training session, speaking to groups of people as well as to individuals will beconsidered public speaking.After leaders complete this training session, they will be given as a homework assignment theresponsibility of preparing a –10- to 15-minute speech to present during a subsequent trainingsession.This session will last approximately two hours and 10 minutes, and includes a discussion, alecture, a model speech by the trainer and practice exercise in small groups allowing eachadvocate to practice giving only the introduction to a short speech. Since 45 minutes of theagenda will be done in small groups, it is advisable to have one co-trainer for every four or fewerleaders. Be sure to model a good presentation when giving thislecture: do not forget to include an agenda, an introduction and a conclusion to the lecture, anduse the chalkboard or butcher paper, if appropriate. Refer the leaders to Appendix 4-A for anoutline of this information.
